Part 3 of 4 in our guide for visitors. New here? Start with the overview.

In short: To plan a Cape Town proposal from overseas, choose your season first, book a local stylist 4 to 8 weeks ahead (longer for December to February), pick a spot that allows a setup, agree a sheltered backup in case of wind, and plan a simple decoy for the day. Alora's Sunset Proposal package starts from R8,900 (about $540, €480, £405) with everything included, planned with you from home.

Cape Town is one of the most popular places in the world to propose on holiday, and it's easy to see why: the Atlantic coast, Table Mountain behind you and long golden evenings in summer. Planning it from London, Munich or New York is a different story. You can't scout the spot, you don't know which beaches get the wind, and you're trying to keep it all hidden from the person sitting next to you on the sofa.

This is the plan we walk visiting couples through, step by step.

1. Pick your season before you pick your spot

Cape Town's seasons change what a proposal looks like, so start here.

  • December to February: long evenings with sunset close to 20:00, warm and dry, but the south-easter wind can be strong and it's the busiest time of year.
  • March to May: our favourite for outdoor proposals. Warm, calmer, clear skies, sunset between about 19:05 and 17:55.
  • June to August: cooler with rain coming through in fronts. Lovely for a fireside villa proposal or a Winelands lunch.
  • September to November: spring, flowers, whales off the coast, and quieter beaches before summer.

If you're coming in December or January, keep in mind that Table Mountain National Park doesn't allow events between 15 December and 15 January, which rules out a styled setup on Lion's Head or Signal Hill in those weeks.

2. Choose a spot that allows a setup

The most photographed spots aren't always the ones where you can put down a picnic table, flowers and a "Marry me" sign. Here's how the main options compare.

  • Sheltered beach (Clifton coves, Bakoven, Llandudno): Why couples choose it: Sand, sea and sunset; Watch out for: No alcohol on City beaches, wind, other people
  • Villa or Airbnb terrace: Why couples choose it: Private, easy to time, the view is already there; Watch out for: Host permission
  • Rooftop or hotel terrace: Why couples choose it: City lights, Table Mountain, less wind risk; Watch out for: Venue booking and fees
  • Winelands garden (Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek): Why couples choose it: Vineyards, mountains, a long lunch after; Watch out for: Many farms don't allow outside suppliers
  • Lion's Head or Signal Hill: Why couples choose it: The famous view; Watch out for: SANParks permit for events, no events after dark

3. Book your stylist 4 to 8 weeks ahead

For most of the year, three to four weeks is enough. For December to February, aim for six to eight. When you message a stylist, send:

  • Your dates in Cape Town and where you're staying
  • Two or three dates that could work for the proposal
  • The setting you're drawn to, or "help me choose"
  • The feeling you want: candlelit and romantic, soft and floral, or simple and natural
  • Whether you want a photographer hidden nearby

You can do all of this from home. Our online planner takes about two minutes, and everything after that happens on WhatsApp.

4. Always have a wind and weather plan

Cape Town weather changes quickly. A good plan has a backup agreed before the day: a more sheltered beach, a covered terrace, or the same setup moved indoors to your villa. We check the forecast with you the day before and decide together, so you're not making a call on the morning of the proposal.

5. Plan the decoy

The hardest part of a holiday proposal is getting your partner to the spot without suspicion. Simple decoys that work in Cape Town:

  • A "sunset drinks" plan at your villa, with the setup on the terrace
  • A booked photoshoot "for the trip", with the photographer in on it
  • A stop on the drive back from Cape Point or the Winelands
  • A dinner reservation, with the setup waiting on the walk there

We build ahead, confirm the timing with you by message, and leave before you arrive.

6. Think about the toast

Alcohol isn't allowed on City of Cape Town beaches, and people found with it are fined. For a beach proposal we style the moment with alcohol-free sparkling wine, and you can open the real bottle back at your villa, at a rooftop bar or at a venue that serves it.

What a proposal in Cape Town costs

Local stylists advertise proposal packages from about R2,800 for a restaurant table to R8,500 for a helicopter. The cheaper ones usually exclude flowers, photography and clean-up, which is why the quote grows once you ask. Our visitor package is priced with everything in it.

  • Sunset Proposal: setup, florals, candles, bubbles, decoy plan, weather backup, clean-up: starting from R8,900
  • Add a photographer for the first hour: starting from R3,500
  • Add a dinner table for two afterwards: starting from R2,800

Half by bank transfer holds the date once you have approved the design; the balance is due seven days before. Cancel 21 days or more out and the deposit comes back minus R750. Full inclusions and booking.

A simple timeline

  1. 8 to 12 weeks out: choose your season and your dates.
  2. 4 to 8 weeks out: send your brief and secure the date with a deposit.
  3. 2 weeks out: confirm the spot, the style and the backup.
  4. The day before: forecast check and final timing on WhatsApp.
  5. On the day: follow the decoy, and leave the rest to us.

Picture it: candles already lit on the terrace, Lion's Head going copper, nobody else there. The Sunset Proposal starts from R8,900 (about $540, €480, £405) with everything included. Check your date and reserve it with a bank transfer deposit, or ask on WhatsApp. We reply within four hours, 8am to 10pm Cape Town time.
