Part 1 of 4 in our guide for visitors. New here? Start with the overview.

In short: For outdoor proposals and picnics, March to May is the best time of year in Cape Town: warm, calmer and clear, with sunset between about 19:05 and 17:55. December to February has the longest evenings but strong south-easter winds and peak-season crowds. June to August suits indoor and fireside celebrations, and September to November brings spring flowers and whales.

Cape Town is in the Southern Hemisphere, so the seasons are the opposite of Europe and North America. Your Christmas holiday is our summer, and an Easter trip lands in our autumn. Here's what each season means for a celebration, from the point of view of someone who sets them up outdoors every week.

December to February: summer

  • Weather: hot and dry, with long days. Sunset is close to 20:00 in December and January.
  • Wind: the south-easter, known locally as the Cape Doctor, can blow hard for days. Sheltered spots and covered backups matter.
  • Crowds: peak season. Hotel occupancy in Cape Town peaks in February, and villas and restaurants book up early.
  • Rules: Table Mountain National Park allows no events between 15 December and 15 January.
  • Best for: villa parties, morning picnics, rooftop sundowners, festive season celebrations.
  • Book: 6 to 8 weeks ahead.

March to May: autumn

  • Weather: still warm, often calmer and clearer than summer.
  • Light: sunset moves from about 19:05 in mid-March to 17:55 in mid-May, so golden hour comes earlier and easier to plan around dinner.
  • Winelands: harvest season, with the vineyards turning gold later in autumn.
  • Best for: beach proposals, picnics, vow renewals, honeymoons.
  • Book: 3 to 4 weeks ahead, longer around Easter.

June to August: winter

  • Weather: cool, green and wetter. Rain arrives with cold fronts, often with clear, still days in between.
  • Light: sunset around 17:45 in June.
  • Best for: fireside villa proposals, indoor room setups, long Winelands lunches, cosy sip and paint afternoons.
  • Good to know: fewer visitors and calmer beaches on the good days. Whale season starts along the coast.
  • Book: 2 to 3 weeks ahead, and keep the plan flexible for the weather.

September to November: spring

  • Weather: warming up, with more sunshine each week. The wind usually returns by November.
  • Light: sunset from about 18:35 in September to 19:25 in November.
  • Nature: wildflowers up the West Coast early in spring, and whales in Walker Bay near Hermanus.
  • Best for: picnics, garden celebrations, proposals before the summer rush.
  • Book: 3 to 4 weeks ahead.

Holidays and dates to plan around

  • Christmas and New Year: the busiest weeks of the year. South African school holidays run from mid-December to mid-January, and many locals are on the coast too.
  • Valentine's Day: falls in peak season, so proposal and picnic dates around 14 February go first.
  • Easter: a popular week for European visitors and for local families, usually in late March or April.
  • Cape Town Cycle Tour and big events: some roads close on event days, which affects set-up timing. We check the city calendar for your date.

What to pack for an outdoor celebration

Even in summer, evenings by the Atlantic cool down quickly because the water is cold. Bring a light jacket or wrap for sunset, flat shoes for sand and grass, and sunscreen for the afternoon. In winter, plan an indoor or covered setup and keep the outdoor part short.

Our pick

If you can choose your dates, come in March or April for a proposal, a picnic or a vow renewal. If you're coming for the festive season, plan a villa-based celebration with an indoor backup and book early.

Coming in peak season? We take at most two visitor setups a day and December dates go first. Check your date and reserve it with a bank transfer deposit, or ask on WhatsApp.
