A sip and paint party is one of the easiest ways to get a group of people talking, laughing and making something together. Nobody needs to be an artist. The painting gives everyone something to do with their hands, the drinks keep things relaxed, and at the end every guest leaves with a canvas and a story.
Hosting one at home in Cape Town is very doable. Here is how we approach it when we set one up, and what to think about if you are planning your own.
Start with the space
You need a flat surface for every guest and enough room to step back and look at the canvas. As a rough guide:
- Tabletop painting works for most homes. Each guest needs about 60cm of table width, so a dining table that seats eight can host eight painters.
- Easels look beautiful and give a more "studio" feel, but take more floor space. They suit open-plan lounges, patios and gardens.
- Light matters more than people expect. Natural daylight is best, so an afternoon session near big windows or on a covered patio is ideal.
If you are hosting outside, choose a spot with shade and some shelter from the wind. Anyone who has lived in Cape Town knows the south-easter can arrive with no warning, and wet canvases do not love it.
What goes on each painting station
Every guest should sit down to a station that is ready to go:
- A canvas (A4 or A3 size is comfortable for a first-time painter)
- A small palette of acrylic paints in the colours of your theme
- Two or three brushes in different sizes
- A water pot and paper towel
- An apron
Setting the stations up before anyone arrives makes a big difference. It looks intentional, it photographs well, and guests can sit down and start without a long wait.
Choose a theme or subject
A shared subject makes the afternoon feel connected, and it gives nervous painters a starting point. Popular choices for Cape Town parties include Table Mountain at sunset, proteas, abstract florals in the party's colour palette and simple beach scenes. For a birthday, a theme that matches the décor ties everything together. For a bridal shower, soft florals are always a hit.
If your group would enjoy some guidance, it helps to have someone lead the painting step by step. If they would rather paint freely, print two or three reference images and leave them on the table.
The "sip" deserves styling too
The drinks and snack table is the second centrepiece. Keep it simple and generous:
- Wine, bubbly or a signature cocktail, plus a good non-alcoholic option
- Finger food that can be eaten with one hand, like a grazing board, mini sandwiches or pastries
- Plenty of water, because painting is surprisingly absorbing and people forget to drink it
Keep food and drink on a separate table from the paint. It saves a lot of accidents, and it gives people a reason to get up, stretch and mingle.
Timing the afternoon
A comfortable flow for a two and a half hour party looks like this:
- First 20 minutes: guests arrive, get a drink and find their station
- Next 90 minutes: painting, with a short break halfway for food
- Last 30 minutes: canvases dry, everyone looks at each other's work, and you take the group photo
That group photo, everyone holding up their canvas, is usually the favourite picture of the day. Plan a clean wall or backdrop for it.
Make it look like an occasion
This is where a sip and paint goes from "a craft afternoon" to a proper celebration. A few styling touches make the biggest difference: a linen tablecloth or runner, fresh flowers in the middle of the table, candles for a late afternoon session, and a balloon garland or backdrop for photos. Small signage with the guest of honour's name or the date turns it into something people remember.
