A baby shower is about one person: the mum-to-be. The best setups make her feel celebrated, give guests a beautiful space to gather, and create a few moments worth photographing. Here is what we focus on when we style a shower, and what we would suggest if you are planning one.

Start with what matters most

If the budget or space is limited, put it into these three things, in this order:

  1. A focal point. A balloon garland, backdrop or arch that anchors the room and becomes the photo spot.
  2. The table. A styled dessert, cake and gift table. It is where guests gather, and where many of the best photos happen.
  3. Her seat. A comfortable, slightly special chair for the mum-to-be, near the focal point, so she can sit for gifts and games.

Everything else, like signage, extra florals and ceiling balloons, adds to the look but is not essential.

Colour palettes that work

  • Sage, cream and gold: calm, modern and gender neutral
  • Blush, ivory and rose gold: soft and classic
  • Powder blue, white and silver: fresh and airy
  • Terracotta, sand and cream: warm and earthy, beautiful in natural light
  • The nursery colours: a lovely personal touch if the parents have already chosen

Pick two main colours and one accent, and repeat them across the balloons, table linen and florals.

Surprise showers

Many Cape Town showers are surprises. The trick is timing. Agree with one trusted person who will bring the mum-to-be, and when. Ask your stylist to finish setting up at least 30 minutes before she is due, and have guests arrive before that. A surprise works best when the reveal moment happens at the focal point, so she walks straight into the setup.

Gender reveals

If the shower includes a reveal, plan it as a moment rather than an afterthought:

  • Decide how it happens: a balloon pop, a box of balloons, a cake cut or confetti
  • Keep the décor neutral until the reveal, so the colour is the surprise
  • Position the reveal in front of the backdrop so photos and video capture it well

Home, garden or venue?

  • Home: relaxed and personal. Check you have space for the garland and a clear area for the table.
  • Garden: beautiful in spring and summer. Plan shade and protect balloons from direct afternoon sun and wind.
  • Restaurant or venue: easy on the host, but check access times for setup and whether the venue allows balloons.
